Review

This review applies to version 1.0 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

“Gourmania” is a contraction of the words gourmet and mania, so you don’t need help to know that is a cooking game. Right from the welcome window and main menu, everything seems to scream cooking! A very nice and colorful screen is the welcome window, with cooking ingredients all over the place, so if you like cooking this could be a great game for you.
In this game you will be representing a novel cook who has to learn by doing. The first scenario is a fast-food shop so you basically will be cooking sandwiches and hot dogs. Not that hard in fact. No matter the complexity of the dish you have to set up, the routine is always the same. The game places you back in the kitchen so you don’t have visual contact with the customers. All you see are the pieces of papers that represent the orders. There, you will be seeing the sandwiched ordered and the special ingredients it requires.
What you have to do is to locate the correct ingredients in the kitchen and click on them. This can be harder than it sounds because the kitchen you are working at is a real mess. When an ingredient requires some kind of preparation task you also have to take care of that. For example, if a sandwich contains cheese, you have to slice the cheese by putting the cheese on the cutting table and waiting a certain amount of time to be ready. Another example would be the sausages, which need to be warmed up in a pot with hot water.
On the side of the order paper there is a patience bar, measuring the level of the customer patience. That is a measure of the time you have available to complete the order before loosing the client, and the money he would’ve paid.
Each level has a score goal you have to reach in order to pass to the next level. Once you pass a level, you will have earned some money which you can use to upgrade the kitchen and cooking equipment. So when you finish a level, the game will show you the store screen where you can choose what to buy depending on how much money you have available.
When you first enter the game, you’ll be asked for a player name and then you’ll see the welcome screen with the following options:
- Play: starts with a tutorial to teach you the basics.
- Settings: this is the menu from which you can set some game options like sound volume, music volume, environment volume, and full screen.
- Exit: no further explanation required.
You can try this game for 60 minutes before you buy the licensed version. If you like it, you can buy this game for only 19.95 dollars, right from the Oberon Media Game Center, on the Web.
